Other companies offer rubber roofs, but the superiority of the Firestone system installed by PMS, is that every component is designed to last as long as the rubber. There’s little point in having a roof where the rubber has a life expectancy of 50 years, but the adhesives only have 10 years. We use only Firestone adhesives. The E.P.D.M. can be ballasted down with pebbles, mechanically attached or fully adhered to the roof, depending on circumstances.

'We investigated re-roofing our slightly pitched roof with a number of materials. We reckoned that replacing the existing felt with new felt was unsuitable due to relatively low life expectancy. GRP roofing was considered too expensive and not as long lasting as we had thought. Then we discovered EPDM and realised that this material provided the best compromise between cost and life expectancy of the roof. In fact, the cost was comparable to recovering the roof using a traditional felt system.

I am an Architect with 45 years experience in the Construction Industry, and on a recent flat roofing refurbishment job, I had some particular requirements, over and above the norm. These were that the new specification should not only meet the conventional flat roofing standards in full, but that it should be longer lasting, should involve the minimum of disruption to the living area underneath and it should be capable of providing 'instant' weatherproofing at a time of year when inclement weather had already set in.
